Olive Fruit Fly (OLFF)

Los Angeles County

Four OLFF were trapped December 21-23, 1998, in Los Angeles County. One of the OLFF were trapped at a new location within the Westwood eradication area. Three of the OLFF were trapped outside the eradication area in Palms and the Mar Vista areas of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles / Westwood

New Trap Location

Ilona Avenue - December 21 - one sexually mature male OLFF found in a McPhail trap placed in an olive tree.

Palms

New Trap Location

Woodbine Street - December 22 - one mated female found in a McPhail trap placed in an olive tree.

The Palms find is approximately a quarter mile south from the olive fruit fly eradication area.

Mar Vista

New Trap Locations

Kingsland Street - December 23 - one sexually mature male olive fruit flies found in a CHAMP trap.

Barrington Avenue - December 23 - one sexually mature male OLFF found in a CHAMP trap placed in an olive tree.

The Mar Vista finds are approximately two miles from the OLFF trapped in the Westwood area.

CDFA trappers Enrique Encisco and Daniel Montoya are credited with finding the OLFF.

CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations.

Olive fruit fly does not respond to cuelure or methyl eugenol. CDFA has increase the McPhail trap density, as needed, to 80 traps per square mile in the core square mile and 40 McPhail traps per square mile in the eight adjacent square miles. In addition, AM panel/CHAMP traps have been deployed at the same density as the McPhail traps within the delimitation trapping area. CDFA is continuing a larval survey on find properties and their adjacents.

Since October 19, 1998, a total of 67 olive fruit flies have been trapped in California. Sixty-one OLFF have been trapped in the Westwood area of Los Angeles and larvae have been found on nine properties. In response, CDFA has initiated ground malathion bait to all olive trees within 200 meters of these finds. Also, five OLFF have been trapped at separate sites in Manhattan Beach, Inglewood, Mar Vista and Palms areas of Los Angeles. CDFA has increased trapping according to protocol around these finds.

In addition to Los Angeles County, one OLFF has been trapped in Garden Grove, Orange County and CDFA has increased trapping according to protocol around this find.
