Mexican Fruit Fly (MxFF)
San Diego County
San Diego
On December 21, 1998, one unmated female Mexican fruit fly
was trapped at a site along Ridgeview Drive. The MxFF was found
in a McPhail trap that was placed in a guava and the site is
within the the San Diego Mexican Fruit Fly eradication zone.
CDFA has two Mexican Fruit Fly eradication projects in the El
Cajon and San Diego areas of San Diego County. Sterile Mexican
fruit flies are being release in a total area of 33 square miles
(El Cajon - 10 square miles /
San Diego - 23 square miles).
The McPhail trap density in the area is five traps per square
mile which is the protocol for SIT release areas. CDFA will conduct
a larval survey in the vicinty of the find.
CDFA trapper Maripaz Bullard and USDA I.D. sorter Gloria Vargas
are credited with finding the Mexican fruit fly.
CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determination.
