Mexican Fruit Fly (MxFF)
San Diego County
San Diego
On November 24, 1998, one sexually immature male Mexican fruit
fly was trapped at a site along 55th Street. The MxFF was found
in a McPhail trap that was placed in a grapefruit tree and the
site is within the the San Diego Mexican Fruit Fly eradication
zone.
CDFA has two Mexican Fruit Fly eradication projects in the El
Cajon and San Diego areas of San Diego County. Sterile Mexican
fruit flies are being release in a total area of 33 square miles
(El Cajon - 10 square miles /
San Diego - 23 square miles).
The McPhail trap density in the area is five traps per square
mile which is the protocol for SIT release areas.
CDFA trapper Gloria Vargas and USDA I.D. sorter Jody Jordan are
credited with finding the Mexican fruit fly.
CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determination.
