Olive Fruit Fly (OLFF)

Los Angeles County

OLFF larvae/pupa were found on November 23 and 24, 1998, at three new sites in the Cheviot Hills area. The finds are near previous OLFF finds.

Cheviot Hills

New Larval/Pupal Location

Wigtown Road - November 23 - seven third instar larvae and one pupa found in olive.

Lorenzo Place - November 23 - one pupa found in olive.

Glenbarr Avenue - November 23 - one third instar larva and six pupal cases found in olive.

CDFA inspectors Maria Ramirez, Alicia Ruiz, and Antonio Urquieta are credited with finding the OLFF.

Olive fruit fly does not respond to cuelure or methyl eugenol. CDFA has increase the McPhail trap density, as needed, to 80 traps per square mile in the core square mile and 40 McPhail traps per square mile in the eight adjacent square miles. In addition, CDFA is conducting a larval survey on find properties and their adjacents is continuing.

Since October 19, 1998, thirty olive fruit flies have been trapped at seven sites in Westwood and Cheviot Hills areas of Los Angeles. Larvae have been found on eight properties. CDFA began ground treatment on November 16 with malathion bait to all olive trees within 200 meters of the finds. Soil drench treatments with diazinon will be made to the larval properties and adjacents.

CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations.
