Olive Fruit Fly (OLFF) Los Angeles County Three OLFF were trapped on November 19 and 20, 1998, in the Westwood area. In addition an OLFF was trapped about 1.5 miles to the southeast in Cheviot Hills. Westwood/West Los Angeles
Cheviot Hills A male OLFF was trapped on November 20, 1998, about 1.5 miles southeast from the Westwood area finds. The fly was found in a McPhail trap that was placed in a olive tree along Wigtown Road. CDFA inspectors Luis Cordova, Enrique Enciso, and Chris Harris are credited with finding the OLFF. Olive fruit fly does not respond to cuelure or methyl eugenol. CDFA has increase the McPhail trap density, as needed, to 80 traps per square mile in the core square mile and 40 McPhail traps per square mile in the eight adjacent square miles. In addition, CDFA is conducting a larval survey on find properties and their adjacents is continuing. Since October 19, 1998, thirty olive fruit flies have been
trapped at seven sites in Westwood and Cheviot Hills areas of
Los Angeles. Larvae have been found on five properties. CDFA
began ground treatment on November 16 with malathion bait to
all olive trees within 200 meters of the finds. Soil drench treatments
with diazinon will be made to the larval properties and adjacents.
