Olive Fruit Fly (OLFF) Los Angeles County Thirteen OLFF were trapped on November 14 and 16, 1998, in the Westwood area. All of the finds are near previous OLFF finds. Larvae were also found. Westwood/West Los Angeles Twelve OLFF were trapped at a site that had previous finds. One unmated female was trapped a new location along Pelham Avenue. In addition,OLFF larvae were found at a property that larvae have been previously detected. All of the finds are near previous OLFF finds.
The trap density in the area of the finds was 80 McPhail traps per square mile. CDFA inspectors Luis Cordova, Ruben Perez, Maria Ramirez, Ernesto Ronquillo, Alicia Ruiz, Antonio Urquieta, and Mary Winters are credited with finding the olive fruit flies. Olive fruit fly does not respond to cuelure or methyl eugenol. CDFA will increase the McPhail trap density, as needed, to 80 traps per square mile in the core square mile and 40 McPhail traps per square mile in the eight adjacent square miles. In addition, CDFA is conducting a larval survey on find properties and their adjacents. Since October 19, 1998, twenty-six olive fruit flies have
been trapped at five sites in Westwood. Larvae have been found
on two properties. CDFA has scheduled ground treatment with malathion
bait of all olive trees within 200 meters of the finds to begin
on November 16. Soil drench treatments with diazinon will be
made to the larval properties and adjacents.
