Olive Fruit Fly (OLFF) Los Angeles County Westwood Olive fruit fly larvae were found on a new property. Also a male and female OLFF were trapped near recent finds (PD76-98;PD88-98;PD92-98). While inspecting olives on November 13th near recent OLFF finds, CDFA Alicia Ruiz and Antonio Urquieta found larvae. In addition, a male and mated female OLFF were trapped on November 13 at a residence along Eastborne Avenue that OLFF have previously been detected. CDFA trapper Juan Ortiz found the fly in a McPhail trap that was placed in an olive tree. The trap density in the area of the finds was 80 McPhail traps per square mile. Olive fruit fly does not respond to cuelure or methyl eugenol. CDFA will increase the McPhail trap density, as needed, to 80 traps per square mile in the core square mile and 40 McPhail traps per square mile in the eight adjacent square miles. In addition, CDFA is conducting a larval survey on find properties and their adjacents. Since October 19, 1998, thirteen olive fruit flies have been
trapped in Westwood. Larvae have been found on two properties.
CDFA has scheduled ground treatment with malathion bait of all
olive trees within 200 meters of the finds to begin on November
16. Soil drench treatments with diazinon will be made to the
larval properties and adjacents.
