Red Imported Fire Ant

Orange County

Trabuco Canyon

Red imported fire ant was found on November 9, 1998, at two sites near the intersection of Trabuco Canyon and Plano Trabuco Roads. This detection find was associated with an alert from Nevada's Department of Agriculture which notified CDFA that a plant shipment from California was infested with RIFA. The nursery involved is adjacent to the detection finds.

In response to this recent RIFA find, CDFA personnel are conducting a delimiting survey. Based on those results eradication treatments will be made.

CDFA entomologists David Asakawa, Mohammed Azhar, Gene Drake, Jim Punty and Orange County entomologist Nick Nissan are credited with finding the RIFA.

CDFA Biosystematist Ray Gill made the determination.
