Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Medfly)
Riverside County
Lake Elsinore
One male Medfly was found on November 9, 1998, by Riverside
County trapper Laura Doughty in a Jackson/trimedlure trap along
Stoneman Steet. The trap had been placed in a apple tree and
the site is near previous Medfly finds (PD88-98).
Riverside County Department of Agriculture trapper and CDFA
I.D. sorter Laura Doughty and Dorinda Singer are credited with
finding the Medfly.
Since October 22, 1998, seventy-three (73) Medflies have been
trapped at 31 separate sites in the Lake Elsinore area. Larvae
have been found on four properties. CDFA initiated ground treatment
with malathion bait spray to find properties and adjacents. Ground
treatment of all properties within 200 meters of the finds began
on October 31 and will continued around these new finds. Sterile
Medfly releases (SIT) began on November 6, 1998.
The CHAMP/yellow panel, Jackson and McPhail traps are being
removed from the SIT release area and are being replaced with
Integrated Pheromone McPhail Traps (IPMT). They are being deployed
at five traps per square.
A quarantine area of 180 square miles has been established.
CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations.
