Olive Fruit Fly (OLFF)

Los Angeles County

Westwood

CDFA trapper Juan Ortiz found nine olive fruit flies (one mated female; eight males) on November 9,1998, in a McPhail trap placed along Eastborne Avenue. The trap was set in an olive tree. The finds are approximately 0.5 miles west of an olive fruit fly that was trapped previously in the area (PD76-98).

The trap density at the time of the find was 40 McPhail traps per square mile.

Olive fruit fly does not respond to cuelure or methyl eugenol. CDFA will increase the McPhail trap density, as needed, to 80 traps per square mile in the core square mile and 40 McPhail traps per square mile in the eight adjacent square miles.

In addition, CDFA is conducting a larval survey on find properties and their adjacents. Treatment options are being considered.

CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman determined that the female olive fruit fly was mated but sexually immature. All of the males were sexually mature.
