Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Medfly)

Riverside County

Three male Medflies were trapped on November 6, 1998 in Lake Elsinore and Wildomar.

Lake Elsinore

Two male Medflies were found in CHAMP/yellow panel traps at separate location along Franquette Street. The finds are near Medflies previously trapped in the Lake Elsinore area and is within the Lake Elsinore Medfly eradication zone (PD86-98).

Wildomar

A male male Medfly was detected in a CHAMP/yellow panel trap along Fox Ridge Lane. The trap was placed in a pomegranate and the site is within the Lake Elsinore eradication zone.

CDFA trappers and I.D. sorter Juan Ortiz, Maria Pupuhi and Margarita Razo are credited with finding the Medflies.

Since October 22, 1998, seventy-two (72) Medflies have been trapped at 30 separate sites in the Lake Elsinore area. Larvae have been found on four properties. CDFA initiated ground treatment with malathion bait spray to find properties and adjacents. Ground treatment of all properties within 200 meters of the finds began on October 31 and will continued around these new finds. Soil drench treatments with diazinon has been completed.

Sterile Medfly releases (SIT) began on November 6, 1998.

The CHAMP/yellow panel and McPhail traps are being removed from the SIT release area and are being replaced with Integrated Pheromone McPhail Traps (IPMT). They are being deployed at five traps per square.

A quarantine area of 180 square miles has been established.

CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations.
