Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Medfly)

Riverside County

Eleven Medflies were trapped on November 2, 1998, in the Lake Elsinore and Lakeland Village area. Larvae were found at a new location in Lake Elsinore. All of the finds are within the Lake Elsinore Medfly eradication area.

Lake Elsinore

Ten (10) Medflies were trapped at eight sites. In addition, Medfly larvae were found at one new site. All of the finds were near the sites that Medflies were previously trapped (PD78-98;PD80-98).

New Trap Location

Amorose Street - November 2 - 1 mated female found in a CHAMP trap placed in a walnut.

Ethlene Drive - November 2 - 1 mated female found a McPhail trap placed in a persimmon.

Machado Street - November 2 -1 male found a CHAMP trap placed in an olive.

Previous Trap Location

Amorose Street - November 2 - 1 male found in a CHAMP trap placed in an persimmon.

Amorose Street - November 2 - 3 males found in a CHAMP trap placed in a lemon.

Ainsworth Place - November 2 - 1 male found in a CHAMP trap placed in an apricot.

Ainsworth Place - November 2 - 1 male found in a CHAMP trap placed in a fig.

Machado Street - November 2 - 1 male found in a CHAMP trap placed in a pomegranate.

New Larval Location

Alvarado Street - November 2 - One second and two third instar larvae found in peach.

Lakeland Village

One male Medfly was trapped on November 2, 1998, along Cottrell Boulevard. The fly was found in a McPhail that had been placed in an orange.

Since October 22, 1998, sixty-two (62) Medflies have been trapped at 24 separate sites in the Lake Elsinore area. Larvae have been found on three properties. CDFA initiated ground treatment with malathion bait spray to find properties and adjacents. Ground treatment of all properties within 200 meters of the finds began on October 31. Soil drench treatments with diazinon are planned for the larval properties.

The trap densities in the core square miles around the finds is 100 CHAMP/yellow panel traps and 25 McPhail traps per square mile. The trap density in the first buffer of eight square miles is 50 CHAMP/yellow panel traps per square mile, with a 25-20-10 array of CHAMP/yellow panel traps outside the first buffer.

Sterile Medfly releases (SIT) is scheduled to begin November 6, 1998.

CDFA and Riverside County Department of Agriculture staff Laura Doughty, Maria Pupuhi, Jason Smith, Erlinda Ramirez, Fernando Rojas and Antonio Urquieta are credited with finding the Medflies.

CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations.
