Four Medflies were trapped between October 21 and 26,1998, in Riverside County. Two male Medflies were trapped at separate locations in the town of Lake Elsinore. On October 22nd one female Medfly was trapped approximately six miles southeast of Lake Elsinore in Sedeco Hills. This was followed by another female trapped on October 26th in Wildomar which is approximately three miles from Sedeco Hills.

Lake Elsinore

On October 21, 1998, two male Medflies were found in a Jackson/trimedlure traps at two nearby locations. The traps were placed along Audelo and Machado Streets in a fig tree and pomegranate tree, respectively.

Sedeco Hills

One mated female Medfly was found on October 22nd in a McPhail trap that was placed in a persimmon tree along Mesa Road.

Wildomar

On October 26th one mated female Medfly was detected in a McPhail trap placed in a persimmon tree at a residence along Elm Street.

The trap density in the area of the finds was five Jackson/trimedlure traps and five McPhail traps per square mile.

In response, CDFA will raise the trap densities, as needed, in an 81-square-mile area around the finds. One hundred (100) Champ and 25 McPhail traps in the core square mile and 50 Champ traps in the eight adjoining square miles. In the remaining area the trap densities will be raised to protocol levels for new Mediterranean fruit fly finds.

In response to the finds, CDFA will initiate eradication activities.

Riverside County trapper Laura Doughty and USDA I.D. sorter Margarita Razo are credited with the finds.

CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations.
