Mexican Fruit Fly (MxFF)

Sixteen Mexican fruit flies were trapped on October 19 and 20, 1998. All of the finds were at or near sites that MxFF have previously been trapped (PD72-98;PD74-98). All of the finds are within the the San Diego Mexican Fruit Fly eradication zone.


New Trap Location

Island Avenue - October 19 - 1 male found in a McPhail trap placed in sapote.

Martin Avenue - October 19 - 1 male found in a McPhail trap placed in a sapote.

26th Street - October 19 - 1 unmated female found in a McPhail trap placed in a Mexican guava.

K Street - October 20 - 1 male and 1 unmated female found in a McPhail trap placed in a sapote.

J Street - October 20 - 1 mated female found in a McPhail trap placed in a sapote.

33rd Street - October 20 - 1 unmated female found in a McPhail trap placed in an orange.

26th Street - October 20 - 1 male found in a McPhail trap placed in a sapote.

Fifty-five MxFF have been trapped in the amended San Diego Mexican fruit fly eradication area. CDFA has been ground treating with malathion bait spray all hosts within 200 meters of the finds. In addition the sterile MxFF release program for San Diego has been expanded to cover a 13-square-mile area around the new finds. Releases are scheduled to begin in this area on October 23. Fruit cutting for MxFF larvae is continuing near all finds.

The McPhail trap density in the area was 160 traps per square mile and will be increased as needed to protocol levels.

CDFA trappers Maripaz Bullard, Renee Fitzpatrick, Yenny Melgoza, Anthony Moreno, Jason Smith and Sandra Weddle along with CDFA I.D. sorter Teodoro Lubrino are credited with finding the Mexican fruit flies

CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations.
