Mexican Fruit Fly (MxFF) San Diego County San Diego Nine Mexican fruit flies were trapped from October 16 to 18, 1998. All of the finds were at or near sites that MxFF have previously been trapped (PD72-98). All of the finds are within the the San Diego Mexican fruit fly eradication zone.
Thirty-nine MxFF have been trapped in the amended San Diego Mexican Fruit Fly Eradication area. CDFA has been ground treating with malathion bait spray all hosts within 200 meters of the finds. In addition the sterile MxFF release program for San Diego has been expanded to cover a 1.5 mile radius around the new finds. Releases are scheduled to begin in this area on October 23. Fruit cutting for MxFF larvae is continuing near all finds. The McPhail trap density in the area was 160 traps per square
mile and will be increased as needed to protocol levels. San Diego County Department of Agriculture, CDFA, and USDA trappers Victor Armendariz, Connie Chavez, Kahsai Ghebretusen, Jorge Olivares, Carolina Rodriguez and Alan Sharon are credited with finding the Mexican fruit flies.
