Mexican Fruit Fly (MxFF) San Diego County San Diego A male Mexican fruit fly was trapped in the San Diego Mexfly eradication zone on September 24, 1998, on the same property as an earlier find (PD64-98). CDFA inspector Carmen Paredes found the fly while servicing McPhail traps on Dwight Street. A total of 19 Mexflies have been found in the established eradication zone of ten square miles. CDFA will continue ground treatment of all hosts within 200 meters of the finds with malathion bait spray. A diazinon soil drench of all larval find and adjacent properties began on September 22, 1998 (PD62-98). Sterile release of Mexican fruit flies begins on September 29, 1998. The McPhail trap density in the area of the find was 80 traps per square mile. It was increased to protocol levels as required. The trap density will be lowered to 5 McPhail traps per square mile at the initiation of sterile release. CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determination.
