Mexican Fruit Fly (MxFF)

San Diego County

San Diego

While inspecting McPhail traps near previous Mexfly finds in San Diego on September 22 and 23, 1998, CDFA crews found five Mexican fruit flies. All of the finds are within the San Diego Mexfly eradication zone, bringing the total to 18 Mexflies in the area.

Two of the Mexflies were sexually mature, mated females trapped along Redwood Street at the same residence as several previous Mexfly and larval finds (PD62-98, PD63-98). An unmated female was traped nearby at a residence on 55th Street. In addition, two males were trapped on Dwight Street and Streamview Drive. All finds are within a half mile of each other with the exception of the find on Dwight Street, which is approximately one mile west. All finds are within the 10-square-mile eradication zone.

CDFA will continue ground treatment of all hosts within 200 meters of the finds with malathion bait spray. A diazinon soil drench of all larval find and adjacent properties began on September 22, 1998 (PD62-98). Sterile release of Mexican fruit flies is scheduled.

The McPhail trap density was 40 traps per square mile at the site of the Dwight Street find and 160 traps per square mile at the sites of the other four finds. The trap density will be increased to protocol levels as required. The trap density will return to 5 McPhail traps per square mile once steriles have been released.

CDFA Inspectors Maripaz Bullard, Carmen Paredes and Sandra Weddle are credited with finding the Mexflies. CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations.
