Mexican Fruit Fly (MxFF) San Diego County San Diego Four more Mexican fruit flies were trapped within the San Diego Mexfly eradication area on September 21, 1998. CDFA Inspector Sandra Weddle found the Mexflies (3 sexually mature, mated females and 1 sexually immature male) while inspecting McPhail traps along Redwood and Alice Streets, at the same residences where Mexflies or larvae were previously trapped (PD60-98; PD62-98). Since September 16, 1998, thirteen Mexican fruit flies have been trapped within the 10-square-mile eradication zone. Second and third instar larvae have also been found on two properties (PD62-98). CDFA will continue ground treatment of all hosts within 200 meters of the finds with malathion bait spray. A diazinon soil drench of all larval find and adjacent properties began on September 22, 1998. Sterile release of Mexican fruit flies has been scheduled. The McPhail trap density at the time of the find was 160 traps per square mile in the core and 40 traps per square mile in the first buffer. The trap density will return to 5 McPhail traps per square mile once steriles have been released. CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations.
