Mexican Fruit Fly (MxFF) San Diego County San Diego On September 19, 1998, CDFA crews inspecting fruit along Alice Street near the mated female Mexfly trapped on September 16 found second and third instar larvae. The next day, second instar larvae were discovered at a residence along Redwood Street, about a block away. Also on September 20, eight Mexican fruit flies were trapped on nearby properties. All of the Mexican fruit flies were found in McPhail traps (2 sexually mature males; 4 sexually mature, mated females; 1 sexually mature, unmated female; and 1 sexually immature, unmated female). All of these finds are within half a mile of each other and are within the 10-square-mile San Diego Mexican fruit fly eradication area (PD60-98). Sterile release of Mexican fruit flies has been scheduled. CDFA will continue ground treatment of all hosts within 200 meters of the finds with malathion bait spray and will also apply a diazinon soil drench to the larval find properties and adjacent properties. The McPhail trap density at the time of the find was 160 traps per square mile in the core and 40 traps per square mile in the first buffer. The trap density will return to 5 McPhail traps per square mile once steriles have been released. CDFA inspector Laurie Whitcomb discovered the adult Mexican fruit flies, while Federal ID Sorter Connie Chavez and CDFA inspectors Emelina Liscano, Maria Pupui and Norma Williams are credited with finding the larvae. CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations.
