Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Medfly)

Orange County

Lake Forest

While inspecting hosts near recent Medfly finds, CDFA inspectors Angel Alba, Paul Lara and Alicia Ruiz found second and third instar larvae. The larvae were found along La Rosa Drive on September 18, 1998. The find site is within the Lake Forest/Mission Viejo eradication zone.

In response to the larvae, CDFA will apply a diazinon soil drench to the larval property and adjacent properties. All Medfly host material will be removed from these properties. Also, ground treatment with malathion bait will be made in a 200 meter radius of the larval find.

Release of sterile Medflies is continuing in a 33-square-mile area around all finds in the Lake Forest/Mission Viejo area. Ground application of malathion bait will continue around recent trap finds.

CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determination.
