Mexican Fruit Fly (MxFF) San Diego County San Diego San Diego County trapper Susan Wise found a mated female Mexican fruit fly on September 16, 1998. The fly was found in a McPhail trap placed in a plum tree along Sue Street. In response, CDFA will begin ground treatment of all hosts within 200 meters of the find with malathion bait spray. Sterile release of Mexican fruit flies (SIT) in a 10-square-mile area around the find will follow. The McPhail trap density at the time of the find was 5 traps per square mile. It will be increased to 80 traps per square mile in the core and 40 traps per square mile in the first buffer. The trap density will return to 5 McPhail traps per square mile once steriles have been released. The San Diego SIT zone is approximately seven miles west of the El Cajon Mexican fruit fly SIT zone. Steriles are being released over a 10-square-mile area in El Cajon. Since July 20, 1998, 13 Mexican fruit flies have been trapped there. CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman determined that the fly was mated and sexually mature.
