Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Medfly)

Orange County

Mission Viejo

On September 10, 1998, a male Medfly was found in Mission Viejo along Limones. The fly was found in a CHAMP/yellow panel trap placed in a fig tree, within the established treatment boundary in Lake Forest and Mission Viejo. This find is near an earlier find in Mission Viejo (PD54-98).

So far this year, seven Medflies have been trapped in the Lake Forest/Mission Viejo area. The SIT treatment area is 33 square miles.

The trap densities in the core square mile of the find are
100 CHAMP/yellow panel traps and 25 McPhail traps per square mile. The trap density in the first buffer of eight square miles is 50 CHAMP/yellow panel traps per square mile, with a 25-20-10 array of CHAMP/yellow panel traps outside the first buffer.

CDFA trapper David Joseph and CDFA ID Sorter Elizabeth Cortez are credited with finding the Medfly. CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determination.
