Melon Fly San Bernardino County Rancho Cucamonga On August 25, 1998, one male melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae, was found at a residence along East Avenue. The fly was found in a McPhail trap placed in a nectarine tree. The trap density in the area was 5 McPhail traps and 2 Jackson/Cue-lure traps per square mile. In response, CDFA and San Bernardino County of Agriculture will increase the McPhail trap density to 25 traps per square mile in the core square mile around the find. The Jackson/Cue-lure trap density will be increased to a 50-25-15-10-5 array over an 81-square-mile area. San Bernardino County trapper Henry Martin and CDFA ID Sorter Suttamas Khowsudtsi are credited with finding the fly. CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determination.
