Mexican Fruit Fly (MxFF) San Diego County El Cajon On August 13, one sexually mature, mated female Mexican fruit fly was found in a McPhail trap along Olive Hills Avenue. The fly was found well within the established treatment boundary in El Cajon. So far, 12 Mexican fruit flies have been trapped in this area this year (PD18-98; PD25-98; PD29-98; PD 35-98). CDFA began an eradication program in El Cajon on July 24. Ground treatment of all hosts within 200 meters of the finds was made with a malathion bait spray. Sterile release of Mexican fruit flies (SIT) in a ten-square-mile area around the finds began on July 31, 1998. The McPhail trap density is 5 traps per square mile within the core square mile and in the surrounding area. In response, CDFA began a larval survey for Mexican fruit flies near the find site. No additional traps will be placed at this time. CDFA trapper Maripaz Bullard and Federal ID Sorter Gloria Vargas are credited with finding the fly. CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determination.
