Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Medfly) Orange County Lake Forest Three Medflies were found on August 4, 1998 by CDFA trapper Israel Rodriguez. One mated female and one male were found in a McPhail trap placed in a peach tree along Larkwood Lane, at the same residence as the last find (PD38-98). Another male was found in a Jackson/trimedlure trap placed in a guava tree at a residence about a block away on Alanwood Street. (All Jackson/methyl eugenol traps in the area were in the process of being replaced by CHAMP/yellow panel traps at the time of this find.) All five of the Lake Forest Medfly finds (PD34-98; PD38-98) are within half a mile of each other. The trap density in the core square mile is 100 CHAMP/yellow panel traps and 25 McPhail traps per square mile. The trap density in the first buffer of eight square miles is 50 CHAMP/yellow panel traps per square mile, with a 25-20-10 array of CHAMP/yellow panel traps outside the first buffer. In response to the finds, CDFA has initiated an eradication program in a 22-square-mile area around the finds. Ground treatments of malathion/bait spray of all hosts within 200 meters has been initiated. Sterile release of Medflies (SIT) in a 22-square-mile area will begin August 12. CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman determined that the female Medfly was mated and sexually immature and the male Medflies were sexually mature.
