Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Medfly) Orange County Lake Forest CDFA trapper Jimmy Ramirez found one unmated female Medfly on August 3, 1998 while servicing McPhail traps. The trap was placed in a peach tree along Larkwood Lane. This find is within half a mile of the previous Medfly find in Lake Forest on July 27 (PD34-98). The trap density was 100 Jackson/trimedlure traps and 25 McPhail traps per square mile in the core square mile area around the previous find. The trap density in the first buffer of eight square miles was 50 Jackson/trimedlure traps per square mile, with a 25-20-10 array of Jackson/trimedlure traps outside the first buffer. In response to the new find, CDFA will not add any new traps but will replace all Jackson/trimedlure traps in the core and first buffer with CHAMP/yellow panel traps. Since the two Lake Forest Medflies are unmated females, it is uncertain if an infestation exists. Therefore, CDFA has decided to treat trap find properties and adjacents with home-owner permission using malathion/bait. CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman determined that the Medfly was unmated and sexually immature.
