Mexican Fruit Fly (MxFF) San Diego County El Cajon On July 25, CDFA trapper Emelina Liscano found one sexually mature, mated female Mexican fruit fly while inspecting McPhail traps along Bermuda Lane. The trap was placed in a peach tree. The next day, Federal trapper Connie Chavez found one sexually mature, mated female Mexican fruit fly in a McPhail trap placed in a peach tree, and one sexually mature, unmated female Mexican fruit fly in a McPhail trap placed in a sapote tree. The flies were found along Conejo Court and Carob Tree Lane, respectively. All three of these finds are within one half mile of the six Mexican fruit flies trapped earlier along Bermuda Lane (PD 18-98; PD 25-98). In response to these earlier finds, CDFA began an eradication program. Ground malathion/bait spray treatment has begun within 200 meters of these finds, and a Mexican Fruit Fly SIT eradication program in a ten-square-mile area is scheduled to begin on July 31, 1998. The McPhail trap density in the treatment area has been 80 traps per square mile in the core and 40 traps per square mile in the surrounding eight-square-mile area. Since all three new finds are within the established treatment boundary, no additional traps will be placed at this time. Releases of sterile Mexican fruit flies are still scheduled to begin the first week of August.
