Africanized Honey Bee (AHB)

Orange County

AHB has been found for the first time in Orange County. Foraging bees were discovered between March 1, 1999, and March 3, 1999, in Costa Mesa, Garden Grove, La Palma, and Seal Beach.

San Diego County

On March 12, 1999, AHB was found in the uncolonized portion of San Diego County. Foraging bees were found in Live Oak Park and San Diego.

As a result of these finds, the AHB colonized area(20 mile radii) has been extended to cover all of Orange and San Diego Counties. Also, the expansion will include the remainder of Riverside County. The new AHB colonized area is 38,920 square miles and includes all of Imperial, Orange, Riverside, San Berndardino and San Diego Counties, and portions of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

CDFA Insect Biosystematist Tom Eichlin confirmed the determination based on mtDNA analysis performed by Scott Kinnee.
