Olive Fruit Fly (OLFF)

On March 10, 1999, CDFA trapper Gerardo Pasillas found one unmated female OLFF
in a CHAMP trap along W. 120th Street. The trap was placed in an olive tree.
This new find is just outside the Los Angeles/ Westwood OLFF treatment boundary.

CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determination.

Olive fruit fly does not respond to cuelure or methyl eugenol. CDFA has increased the McPhail trap density, as needed, to 80 traps per square mile in the core square mile and 40 McPhail traps per square mile in the eight adjacent square miles. In addition, AM panel/CHAMP traps have been deployed at the same density as the McPhail traps within the delimitation trapping area. CDFA is continuing a larval survey on find properties and their adjacents.

Since October 19, 1998, a total of 307 olive fruit flies have been trapped in California. Two hundred and eighty- six (286) OLFF have been trapped in the Westwood area of Los Angeles and larvae have been found on 15 properties. In response, CDFA has initiated ground malathion bait to all olive trees within 200 meters of these finds. Also, nineteen (19) OLFF have been trapped at separate sites in Alta Dena, Athens, Bel Air Estates, Brentwood, Crenshaw (6), Hawthorne, Inglewood, Los Angeles(3), Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, View Park, and West Hollywood areas. CDFA has increased trapping according to protocol around these finds.

In addition to Los Angeles County, two OLFF has been trapped in Garden Grove and Rossmoor, Orange County and CDFA has increased trapping according to protocol around these finds.
