Olive Fruit Fly (OLFF)

Los Angeles County

Ten OLFF were trapped between February 8 and February 9, 1999, in Los Angeles County. One male OLFF was found in Hawthorne and is outside the Los Angeles/Westwood OLFF treatment boundary. The remainder of the OLFF were trapped in West Los Angeles and Westwood and are within the treatment area.

Hawthorne

New Trap Location

Tarron Ave. - February 9 - one unmated female was found in a CHAMP trap placed in an olive tree.

West Los Angeles

New Trap Location

Pandora Ave. - February 8 - one sexually mature male was found in a CHAMP trap placed in an olive tree.

Westwood

Previous Trap Location

Santa Monica Blvd. - February 8 - two sexually mature and one sexually immature male; five unmated female OLFF were found in CHAMP traps placed in olive trees on the same property.

CDFA trappers Luis Cordova, Gerardo Pasillas, and Ernesto Ronquillo are credited with finding the OLFF.

CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations.

Olive fruit fly does not respond to cuelure or methyl eugenol. CDFA has increased the McPhail trap density, as needed, to 80 traps per square mile in the core square mile and 40 McPhail traps per square mile in the eight adjacent square miles. In addition, AM panel/CHAMP traps have been deployed at the same density as the McPhail traps within the delimitation trapping area. CDFA is continuing a larval survey on find properties and their adjacents.

Since October 19, 1998, a total of 296 olive fruit flies have been trapped in California. Two hundred and eighty-two (282) OLFF have been trapped in the Westwood area of Los Angeles and larvae have been found on 11 properties. In response, CDFA has initiated ground malathion bait to all olive trees within 200 meters of these finds. Also, twelve (12) OLFF have been trapped at separate sites in Alta Dena, Bel Air Estates, Crenshaw (3), Hawthorne, Inglewood, Los Angeles(2), Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and West Hollywood areas. CDFA has increased trapping according to protocol around these finds.

In addition to Los Angeles County, two OLFF has been trapped in Garden Grove and Rossmoor, Orange County and CDFA has increased trapping according to protocol around these finds.
