Olive Fruit Fly (OLFF) Los Angeles County Eight OLFF were trapped in Los Angeles County. One male OLFF was trapped on January 13, 1999, and is just outside the Los Angeles/Westwood OLFF treatment boundary. On January 21st and 22nd seven OLFF were trapped and larvae were found at two new sites. All of these OLFF finds are inside the treatment area. Cheviot Hills

CDFA trappers Gilbert Ayala, Luis Cordova, Chris Harris, Kenny Heralal, Anthony Moreno, Maria Ramirez, Alicia Ruiz, Lupe Segura, and Adrian Vargas are credited with finding the OLFF. CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations. Olive fruit fly does not respond to cuelure or methyl eugenol. CDFA has increase the McPhail trap density, as needed, to 80 traps per square mile in the core square mile and 40 McPhail traps per square mile in the eight adjacent square miles. In addition, AM panel/CHAMP traps have been deployed at the same density as the McPhail traps within the delimitation trapping area. CDFA is continuing a larval survey on find properties and their adjacents. Since October 19, 1998, a total of 265 olive fruit flies have
been trapped in California. Two hundred and fifty-six (256)
OLFF have been trapped in the Westwood area of Los Angeles and
larvae have been found on 11 properties. In response, CDFA
has initiated ground malathion bait to all olive trees within
200 meters of these finds. Also, seven (7) OLFF have been trapped
at separate sites in Alta Dena, Inglewood, Los Angeles(2), Manhattan
Beach, Redondo Beach and West Hollywood areas. CDFA has increased
trapping according to protocol around these finds.
