Olive Fruit Fly (OLFF) From January 6 - 8, 1999, a total of 67 olive fruit flies were trapped in Los Angeles County. Los Angeles County Westwood New Trap Find On January 7, CDFA inspector Robert Lopez found one sexually mature male in a CHAMP trap along Kelton Avenue. The trap was placed in an olive tree. Previous Trap Find CDFA trappers Joe Hendrickson, Robert Lopez, and David Neustadt found 45 males and 21 females from January 6-8 in 15 CHAMP traps at the same Santa Monica Boulevard site. All of the traps were placed in olive trees. CDFA Insect Biosystematist Kevin Hoffman made the determinations. Olive fruit fly does not respond to cuelure or methyl eugenol. CDFA has increased the McPhail trap density, as needed, to 80 traps per square mile in the core square mile and 40 McPhail traps per square mile in the eight adjacent square miles. In addition, AM panel/CHAMP traps have been deployed at the same density as the McPhail traps within the delimitation trapping area. CDFA is continuing a larval survey in the area of recent finds. Since October 19, 1998, a total of 241 olive fruit flies have been trapped in California. Two hundred and thirty- four (234) OLFF have been trapped in the Westwood area of Los Angeles and larvae have been found on nine properties. In response, CDFA has been applying malathion bait from the ground to all olive trees within 200 meters of these finds. Also, five OLFF have been trapped at separate sites in Alta Dena, Inglewood, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and West Hollywood areas of Los Angeles. CDFA has increased trapping according to protocol around these finds. In addition to Los Angeles County, two OLFF has been trapped in Garden Grove and Rossmoor, Orange County and CDFA has increased trapping according to protocol around these finds.
