Africanized Honey Bee

Los Angeles County

Lawndale

The first naturally migrating swarm of AHB was found on November 23, 1998, in Los Angeles County. The swarm was discovered at a site along Manhattan Beach Boulevard in Lawndale. In response Los Angeles County Department of Agriculture surveyed the area. Two more swarms and a feral nest were taken and identified as AHB.

As a result of these finds, the AHB colonized area has expanded into Los Angeles County. The new AHB colonized area is 34,830 square miles and includes all of Imperial County and San Berndardino Counties, and parts of Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Diego Counties.

CDFA Insect Biosystematist Tom Eichlin confirmed the determination based on mtDNA analysis performed by Scott Kinnee.
