PLANT QUARANTINE ESTABLISHED IN
RIVERSIDE AND LOS ANGELES COUNTIES DUE
TO RED IMPORTED FIRE ANT INFESTATION

SACRAMENTO - The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has placed portions of Riverside and Los Angeles counties under plant quarantine due to the Red Imported Fire Ant infestation. The quarantine is effective immediately.

The following are general quarantine boundaries established in Riverside and Los Angeles counties:
Riverside County: In the Moreno Valley area, bounded to the north at Canyon Ranch Road; east at Alta Vista Drive; south at Gregory Lane; and west at Sunnymead Ranch Parkway. In Indio, bounded to the north at Avenue 50; at Jackson Street; 54th Avenue to the south; and east at Madison Street. Areas including portions of Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert and Bermuda Dunes are also under quarantine. The total area in Riverside County under the plant quarantine is roughly 38 square miles.

Los Angeles County: Bounded to the north at Artesia Boulevard; east on Walker Street; south along the Los Angeles/Orange County line; and west at Pioneer Boulevard. The quarantine area is roughly 4.5 square miles.

On February 4, 1999, the entire County of Orange was placed under a plant quarantine due to the widespread infestation of Red Imported Fire Ant discovered there in November 1998.  The plant quarantine is established to limit movement of plants and soil within or outside each quarantined area. Residents in the above areas are asked not to move such items from their property. If movement of product is necessary, please contact your local county agricultural commissioner.
